Equipment
When buying a camera, you need to think about what camera is best for what YOU want to use it for. Here’s a few different types of cameras, and the pros and cons of each.
If you want to capture action with your camera, there are special ones made just for that. Action cams (such as the GoPro) are durable, easy to use, generally cheaper than most cameras, and can attach to things like bikes or helmets with ease. They mainly record video, and can also take photos. However, they can’t zoom, and there aren’t very many settings on them. They are still a great option if you need a video camera that can handle a few bumps and bruises.

A simple point-and-shoot camera takes photos similar to the quality of a smartphone, but with better control over settings and a better zoom function. They can be relatively cheap, and the photo quality is decent. There are some models that have much better zoom and a few more settings, but these are more expensive.

Compact cameras are around the same size as a point-and-shoot, but they have a much improved image quality, lens. and more advanced controls. They can be a lot more expensive, but for dedicated photographers they are worth it.
DSLRs are more for serious photographers, as they are very expensive and a bit more complicated than other types of cameras. Lenses can be interchanged, which is great for taking photos, but not great on the wallet. The photo quality is superior to most other cameras, and they have a full range of settings to really fine tune things. However, they are generally large and bulky, and difficult to carry around.
Of course, it isn’t necessary to buy a camera for photography if you own a smartphone with a camera built in. This is a good option for beginners, because it’s easy to use and a good way to see if photography is something you would consider taking up as a hobby. The photo quality is decent on most phones, and it will almost always be with you, allowing you to be prepared for a great photo opportunity. The drawback is that there are only very limited settings, which don’t allow you much freedom.
In addition to a camera, accessories can be a good investment. Tripods are great for shooting landscape photos, time lapses, and group photos. They’re sold for almost every type of camera, even smartphones! Different lenses for DSLRs can also take your photos to the next level. For example, macro lenses allow you to take super close up shots of things.
Don’t want to buy any of these? That’s okay! All you need to get started with photography is anything that is capable of taking photos and some inspiration.
