Nuclear Power
Benefits
Nuclear power comes with many benefits and some of the more obvious reasons
is that nuclear power produces no CO2 and that only a single atom can
provide huge amounts of energy.
A list of Nuclear Power benefits and some comparisons to fossil fuels:
- Nuclear Power does not produce CO2 emissions whereas coal
and oil produce CO2 and gases that cause acid rain and smog.
- By using nuclear energy in Canada 90 million tonnes of greenhouse gas
emission is avoided compared to using coal.
- The price of nuclear energy is very stable unlike many fossil fuels.
The price does not fluctuate, because mining uranium is only a very small
part of the process.
- Nuclear power is very reliable, in 2008 several of Canada's nuclear
generating units operated for more than 90% of available hours. Other
forms of power generation like wind or sun are less reliable.
- Canada's nuclear industry contributes 1.5 billion in revenue to the
government and directly provides 21000 jobs to people.
- Nuclear power is highly regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety
Commission which is part of the federal government.
- Radiation is considered as the negative of Nuclear Power but
it can also be an effective tool treat cancer; the nuclear
industry delivers 15 million cancer treatments a year worldwide.
