General Tips

This is the page for tips on studying and homework in general. The tips here should be common sense, but sometimes students (including myself) don't follow them anyway.

One thing you should do is get to class on time. Wake up early if you can't. If you don't, you'll miss parts of the class which you'll have to catch up on later. No one likes catching up. You'll also miss out on talking to your friends before class!

Bring everything you'll need to class! Don't leave it in your locker, but actually bring it to class! This includes books, pencils, paper, everything you need. If you're not sure if you'll need it, bring it along just in case. Always bring a writing utensil (pencils are great) to every class, in case you have to take notes.

When you finally make it to class, focus on the lesson! It really helps, believe me. Take notes, listen to the teacher... just pay attention. You'll understand much more if you do. Yes, that means pay attention in the classes you don't like, even if that means using lots of willpower to pay attention.

A good thing to do is to finish as much homework as you can at school. If you get it done in class time, you won't have to use your free time for it. Don't feel pressured to get it all done in class though. You want to keep the quality of your work as high as possible.

When you get homework, remember to write it down in a planner or something, especially if you tend to forget the assignments and tests you have to do. Be sure to write down when it's due too. If you have to do a project, make a to-do list, and break the project up into smaller tasks.

When you do your homework at home (you did bring it home, right?), make sure you're comfortable. It's harder to do homework when you're hungry, tired, sleepy, stressed...etc. Ideally, you should work somewhere clean, neat, and free of distractions and noise. It's tempting to procrastinate and put off homework until later, but eventually you'll realize that it's really late and rush your homework. So don't put it off! Also, don't stay up really late, whether you're doing homework or not. Being tired in class results in less focus on the lesson.

When you do homework on the computer, save your work! One of the worst feelings you can have in school is the feeling of a hard day's work slip away. Usually, you can just press CTRL+S to save your work, but you can also save by clicking on the File button near the top left and click on "Save".

Inevitably, you're going to have to take some tests, which means you'll have to study. You should also study like you do homework: when you're comfortable, somewhere clean and neat...etc. It's easier to remember things if you write them down, practice them (if it's something like math or info tech), and/or read them aloud. Try to visualize things when you can. It's also easier to remember things if you're eating or chewing gum while studying. Also, studying often for short periods of time is more effective than cramming it all in one night.

You can't study your notes unless you know where they are, so it's important that you keep your notes, assignments and all that organized. Use dividers in a binder, use separate binders/notebooks/duotangs for different subjects, and don't throw anything out. Try not to lose your textbook either, as you won't be able to use it to study, and you'll likely end up paying for a replacement.

For exams, start studying early and get a good night's sleep before the exam. Be sure to arrive on time, as you'll probably need all the time you can get. Also, you might not even be allowed to take the exam if you're late. So, wake up early, make sure you know where the exam is, and arrive early. Be sure to review each topic thoroughly.
